1. CONCEALED CRITICAL SAFETY INFORMATION FROM THE BOARD: According to a former board member, Altman released ChatGPT without informing the board. They found out via twitter. It was also revealed that ChatGPT-4 was tested in India without approval from the safety board.
2. DEPRIORITIZED SAFETY: He stripped the safety team of its powers -- cutting back on time and resources allocated to safety testing which eventually led to seven people quitting the company over safety concerns.
3. MISLED CONGRESS ABOUT HIS EQUITY IN OPENAI: Altman testified to congress: “I get paid enough for health insurance. I have no equity in OpenAI. I’m doing this because I love it.” That’s misleading -- he had equity in Y combinator, and Y combinator owned stock in OpenAI.
4. LIED ABOUT REGULATION: At that same senate hearing, Altman said that he’s all for AI regulation. But a month after that hearing, it was revealed that OpenAI was lobbying to water down the EU AI Act.
5. LONG HISTORY OF LIES AND TOXICITY: His management team at Loopt asked the board to fire him not once but *twice* because of “deceptive chaotic behavior”.
6. CONCEALED STARTUP INVESTMENT INFORMATION FROM THE BOARD: He set up the OpenAI Startup Fund, and didn’t tell the board that he was an owner of the fund personally and had the power to make investment decisions.
7. CREATED A TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT: Former executives reported “psychological abuse” and claimed that they couldn’t give Altman honest feedback. Some reported that he would say whatever he needed in order to get what he wanted and if that didn’t work, he’d undermine you or destroy your credibility.
8. STEALING DATA: A lawsuit alleges that OpenAI stole huge amounts of data – including medical records and information about children -- in order to train ChatGPT.
9. BACKTRACKING ON OPENAI’S CHARITABLE MISSION: Altman reversed OpenAI’s policy so that its technology can now be used for “national security” reasons - including by the Israeli military to target and kill Palestinians in Gaza. OpenAI also struck a deal with weapons maker Anduril which raised concerns among OpenAI staff regarding the militarization of AI and the impact that could have on humanity. OpenAI is also teaming up directly with the US Army to "help guide rapid and scalable tech solutions to complex problems."
10.THE NON-PROFIT THING WAS A SCAM AFTER ALL: Sam Altman promised OpenAI will be a non-profit and develop AI for the greater good. But after taking millions in public money, he’s reversing course and trying to make OpenAI a for-profit company where investors (including himself) could get exuberantly rich off the technology with no caps on profits.
